Acclaimed Korean crime thriller Beyond Evil is getting a Japanese remake.
Production company SLL announced on April 23 that the JTBC drama Beyond Evil (written by Kim Su-jin, directed by Shim Na-yeon and Choi Ji-young) will be remade in Japan, with the first episode set to air this July on Japanese satellite broadcaster WOWOW.
🎬 Originally aired in 2021, Beyond Evil tells the gripping story of two detectives relentlessly pursuing the truth behind a series of murders. The drama swept the Baeksang Arts Awards, winning Best Drama, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor (Shin Ha-kyun).
💬 According to SLL, WOWOW approached them with the remake proposal. While the main storyline will remain faithful to the original, the Japanese version will incorporate local cultural nuances and a fresh reinterpretation.
🎭 Cast confirmed:
- Ken Yasuda will take on the lead role originally played by Shin Ha-kyun.
- Koshi Mizukami is set to portray the younger detective, originally played by Yeo Jin-goo.
SLL stated,
"This collaboration proves the potential of strong story-driven IPs to expand globally. As the original creators, we'll work to ensure the remake maintains a high level of quality."
The Japanese remake is expected to echo the psychological depth and moral complexity that made the original Beyond Evil a fan favorite and critical success.
