Actor Kim Soo-hyun sets the record straight on his ₩12 billion damage lawsuit—he did pay the fees, and he's hunting down the defendants.
⚖️ No, he didn't skip the legal fees
On April 17, legal representatives for Kim Soo-hyun denied rumors that the actor failed to pay the necessary filing fees for his ₩120 billion KRW (~$90 million USD) civil lawsuit. "The court fees and delivery charges were fully paid on April 10," said LKB & Partners in a statement to Dispatch.
💼 The lawsuit: what it's about
Kim Soo-hyun filed the massive damage claim on March 31 against several individuals:
- The alleged aunt of the late actress Kim Sae-ron
- Certain members of her family
- YouTuber and Garo Sero Research Institute (GSRI) representative Kim Se-eui
This comes in addition to an existing criminal defamation case filed under Korea's Information and Communications Network Act.
📍 So why the delay? It's about the address
The Seoul Central District Court issued a "supplementary order" on April 2, asking for clarification—not because of nonpayment, but because one of the defendants' addresses is still unknown.
In civil cases (unlike criminal), it's the plaintiff's job to identify and locate the parties involved. One of the accused—who was introduced as a relative of the deceased—has yet to be fully identified and is currently labeled as a "person of unknown identity."
📄 Kim's legal team requested a filing extension
On April 16, Kim's lawyers filed for more time to gather address information. Attorney Bang Sung-hoon clarified, "This isn't about delaying the case—we're actually trying to speed things up so we can get a ruling as soon as possible."
🚫 Firm denies speculation about dragging things out
The legal team pushed back against online theories claiming Kim's side is deliberately stalling: "It's the opposite—we're working to proceed quickly and transparently."
🛡️ Separately, his agency is cracking down on online hate
Kim Soo-hyun's agency Gold Medalist also confirmed that they recently filed criminal complaints against malicious commenters for defamation and insult under Korea's Information and Communications Network Act and Criminal Act.
