Singer and actress IU recently opened up about her battle with "Skeeter Syndrome." Appearing as a guest on the online channel You In Radio on December 19, IU engaged in a candid conversation with her close friend, actress Yoo In-na.
During a balance game segment, IU was asked, "Would you rather hear the sound of a mosquito while sleeping or wake up covered in mosquito bites?" She replied, "Both are absolutely infuriating, but I think I'd prefer not to get bitten."
IU further explained, "As Yoo In-na knows, getting bitten by a mosquito leads to severe complications for me. When I get bitten, I develop large, swollen welts, sometimes so severe that I need antibiotics. The bites ooze and are painful." She described her condition as "like a mosquito allergy." After searching together, they discovered that the condition is known as Skeeter Syndrome.
She added, "Mosquitoes always bite my face, leaving scars. Parts of my skin that were severely affected when I was younger are still damaged. Even if I poke those spots with a needle, I can't feel anything because the tissue is dead. That's why I hate mosquitoes more than cockroaches."
Skeeter Syndrome is a condition characterized by an allergic reaction to mosquito bites, leading to severe symptoms such as swelling, redness, warmth, itching, and pain. As of now, there is no fundamental cure for the syndrome. Experts emphasize that avoiding mosquito bites is the best preventive measure.
Meanwhile, IU is set to appear in the Netflix series When Life Gives You Tangerines (scheduled for release in 2025) and has confirmed her role alongside Byeon Woo-seok in MBC's new drama The Wife of the Crown Prince in the 21st Century(working title).
