K-pop continues to lead the global music scene with explosive popularity, and the competition for the Singer of the Year award is fiercer than ever. In particular, attention is focused on NewJeans, who have had a stellar performance at AAA over the past two years.
NewJeans made their Japanese debut in June with the single "Supernatural," achieving the remarkable feat of becoming the fastest overseas artist (1 year and 11 months) to perform at the Tokyo Dome. Their song "How Sweet" was ranked 35th on Rolling Stone's "Best Songs of 2024," while "Supernatural" was the only K-pop entry in The New York Times' Best Songs of the Year list.
Since their debut, NewJeans has garnered impressive accolades. In 2022, they won both the Performance of the Year award and the Rookie of the Year award at AAA. In 2023, they claimed six trophies, including Singer of the Year and Song of the Year, earning the title of the most awarded act in the ceremony's history. Expectations are high for what they will achieve this year.
Meanwhile, NewJeans made headlines on October 28 when they announced at a press conference, "As of November 29, we are terminating our exclusive contract with ADOR and will continue our activities independently, free from HYBE and ADOR." In response, ADOR stated, "The exclusive contract remains valid until July 31, 2029," and filed a lawsuit at the Seoul Central District Court on December 3 to confirm the validity of the contract.
