Kim Moo-yul Cast as the Lead in "Get Schooled"

Actor Kim Moo-yul Cast as Lead in Drama "Get Schooled," with Script Newly Adapted Amid Controversy

Actor Kim Moo-yeol has been confirmed as the lead in the upcoming drama "Get Schooled," which has adapted its script to address concerns surrounding the original webtoon. The series delivers a message about restoring respect for educators, set against the backdrop of the fictional Bureau of Educational Rights Protection.

The drama is directed by Hong Jong-chan, known for works such as Netflix's Mr. Plankton, Juvenile Justice, and tvN's Dear My Friends. Renowned for his warm and delicate portrayal of diverse characters, Hong shared his thoughts on the project: "I've followed prominent issues in education over the years and wanted to explore those left unprotected by the system as well as those who exploit it." He emphasized, "This is a story that's crucial for our time, developed with great care and responsibility."

The original webtoon faced strong criticism for its portrayal of racism and feminism, leading to a three-month hiatus and suspension of its serialization on North American platforms. The production team has clarified that the drama is distinct from the original webtoon, stating, "We are aware of the concerns and criticisms regarding certain episodes in the source material. The drama has been developed with a more refined and conscientious perspective."

Kim Moo-yul will play Na Hwa-jin, a supervisor at the Bureau of Educational Rights Protection. Explaining his decision to join the cast, he said, "After reading the adapted script, I felt this work would make people reflect on issues like educational inequality and systemic injustices." He also expressed trust in director Hong Jong-chan, noting, "Hong handled challenging subjects with conviction in Juvenile Justice. I have immense confidence in his directing capabilities."

The script is written by Lee Nam-gyu, known for delicately addressing societal issues in works such as Daily Dose of Sunshine and The Light in Your Eyes. Lee remarked, "I hope Get Schooled confronts the challenges of today's educational landscape and becomes a small catalyst for finding ways to restore respect for educators."

Get Schooled is scheduled to begin filming in the first half of 2025, with its broadcast schedule currently under discussion.
