(G)I-DLE's leader Jeon Soyeon shared her thoughts on idol culture. On the 27th, the YouTube channel "df" uploaded a video titled "Speaking Out on Contract Renewal Controversies."
In the video, Jeon Soyeon said, "I wish the term 'idol-like' would disappear. Our members are the kind of people who say what needs to be said and show what they want to show. They're not easily swayed by external factors."
She continued, "It's upsetting that there are things idols aren't allowed to do. I believe what's truly wrong is something like a crime. That's what a mistake is. I think my members feel the same way. When idols act naturally, just like regular people, it's seen as unusual. People say, 'But idols don't usually do that.'"
As a specific example, she mentioned "smoking," saying, "People think it's bad, but smoking is one of those things that's allowed. It's not illegal. What's the problem if an adult smokes or drinks alcohol? But idols aren't allowed to do it."
On the topic of idols dating, she commented, "You don't have to hide it. If you're prepared for the consequences and choose not to hide it, that's fine. But if you want to maintain your fans' trust while dating, that's contradictory and greedy." She added, "Our group is relatively free. Since our team is older, we've become a bit freer in that sense."
Meanwhile, Jeon Soyeon is currently in discussions with her agency, Cube Entertainment, regarding contract renewal. Earlier reports claimed that her contract renewal had fallen through, but the agency denied these rumors.
