A (39-year-old) woman accused of posting malicious comments about singer and actress IU (Lee Ji-eun) is facing trial.
On November 27, a sentencing hearing was held at the Seoul Central District Court, where prosecutors requested a four-month prison sentence for the defendant, identified as Kim.
Kim was indicted for posting four defamatory comments in April 2022, criticizing IU's vocal ability and stage outfits. She pleaded for leniency, claiming her actions were a matter of personal preference and citing mental health issues that affected her expression.
The first sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 3.
IU has consistently taken a firm legal stance against malicious commenters. On November 11, her agency EDAM Entertainment released an update on criminal complaints filed for the years 2023-2024, revealing that over 180 individuals have been accused so far, with additional complaints ongoing.
The agency reported outcomes including six fines, three conditional suspensions requiring education, and one probationary suspension involving guidance by a probation office.
EDAM further disclosed that they have identified individuals using overseas servers and those suspected to reside abroad, including a middle school acquaintance of IU who continues to harass her. Investigations are ongoing, with assistance from relevant authorities to trace international offenders.
The agency reaffirmed its position, stating, "There will be no settlements or leniency granted under any circumstances."
