WayV Returns with New Mini-Album 'FREQUENCY'
WayV is making a comeback with their sixth mini-album, 'FREQUENCY,' released today (November 25) at 6 PM KST. The album will be available on various music platforms, and the Korean version of the title track's music video will premiere simultaneously on SMTOWN's YouTube channel.
The album features six tracks, including the Korean and Chinese versions of the title song 'FREQUENCY,' as well as 'HIGH FIVE,''TWIST,''Filthy Rich,' and 'Call Me.' With a variety of moods and genres, the album showcases a refreshed musical style for WayV.
The title track 'FREQUENCY' is an old-school hip-hop dance song blending heavy bass and powerful drum beats. With a boom bap rhythm, addictive hooks, and distinctive rap synergy, the track conveys a message of "tuning into our frequency to reach a new dimension," promising a strong response from fans.
WayV has had a remarkable year, starting with their fifth mini-album, 'Give Me That,' which earned them their first music show win, and their ongoing first solo concert tour, which extends into February 2024. They also released their debut Japanese mini-album, 'The Highest,' which achieved double crowns on the Oricon weekly chart.
With this comeback, WayV continues their dynamic activities, poised to conclude 2024 on a high note and solidify their global presence.
Here's a Q&A with WayV on Their Sixth Mini-Album 'FREQUENCY.'
Q. It's been about five months since your last mini-album 'Give Me That' in June. How do you feel about this comeback?
Ten: Coming back with a new concept makes me both nervous and excited. We all love every track on this album, so I'm confident WayZenNi (our official fandom) will love it 100% as well. WayV is ready to shake your hearts!
Hendery: This album features songs in Korean, Chinese, and English, so I think fans from all around the world will really enjoy it.
Xiaojun: Through this album, I want to show just how well WayV and WayZenNi's 'FREQUENCY' aligns. Please look forward to it!
Q. The title track 'FREQUENCY' has a different vibe from the funky 'Give Me That.' What were your first impressions of the song, and what should fans focus on while listening?
Kun: I liked it from the start because it felt like a song that would shine even more with choreography and performance. I think the "Plululululu" sound, like a ringing phone before the chorus, is a standout point.
Yangyang: It's different from 'Give Me That' and also WayV's first attempt at an old-school hip-hop track. I was a bit worried if we could pull it off, but after hearing the final version, I really liked it. People around me have been loving it too.
Ten: I think WayV's subtle yet diverse rap tones really stand out in this track. The bass and beats are amazing, and even the instrumental version sounds great. Also, Kun's sweet pre-chorus part will definitely be a favorite for WayZenNi! ^^
Q. Among the tracks on this album, which would you recommend fans to listen to?
Kun:'Filthy Rich.' I love R&B, and from the first time I heard it, I thought it was a perfect fit for us.
Ten:'Call Me.' When I listen to it alone, it feels like someone is calling my name, and I feel like I've become someone's anchor (laughs). I hope WayZenNi feels the same way when they listen to it.
Xiaojun: I'd pick 'TWIST.' I love its arrangement style, and listening to it boosts my energy.
Hendery:'Call Me.' It's an easy-listening track that's great for driving or winding down before bed.
Yangyang: I'd say 'Filthy Rich.' It has a reggaeton-style rap, and I had so much fun recording it. It was a new challenge since it's a style we hadn't tried before, and the final result turned out really well.
Q. Were there any fun episodes while working on this album?
Yangyang: I think this will appear in our behind-the-scenes recording footage later, but Hendery and I recorded the "Plululululu" part in 'FREQUENCY.' We had so much fun doing it, and I think fans will enjoy watching it. Also, during the recording process, the vocal members tried rapping, and it surprisingly fit well!
Xiaojun: The 'FREQUENCY' music video has a concept where each of us has a special ability, but since the CGI was added later, it felt a bit awkward during filming (laughs). Still, it was a lot of fun.
Hendery: In the music video, we wear unique accessories and props to match the concept. Expressing the theme was a bit challenging, but everyone did a great job.
Kun: While filming this music video, I felt that the members' acting skills improved a lot. We had to imagine the visuals in our minds and act accordingly, and everyone did better than I expected. Also, the teaser and album jacket images were in a style we hadn't tried before, and they turned out great!
Q. This year you've had your first solo concert tour, debuted in Japan, and been active globally. What's been the most memorable moment?
Yangyang: The concert tour was the most memorable for me. Finally being able to hold our first concert made me so happy, and it felt amazing to give back to the fans who had been waiting for us. I even cried for the first time during a performance. Debuting in Japan was also a joy. Singing Japanese songs in front of Japanese WayZenNi was surreal and felt like another exciting challenge. The fans loved it, and I even learned a lot of Japanese!
Kun: For me, it was also the concert. I had to play the piano on stage, and at first, I was so nervous that my hands were shaking. But as we continued performing, I got used to it and can now play more smoothly and confidently.
Hendery: My standout memory was Xiaojun's performance of 'Love Talk' during the concert. We performed it in a cage with a sultry vibe, and the fans' reactions were the loudest when Xiaojun appeared.
Ten: Xiaojun's video from that performance spread everywhere; I'm sure WayZenNi around the world have seen it.
Xiaojun: I think I successfully embodied the word 'sexy' during this concert, and I'm quite satisfied with that. (laughs)
Q. Any messages for the fans who always support WayV?
Kun: I'm so happy we had many opportunities to meet this year. We'll continue to show a growing WayV. Thank you so much for your love!
Ten: WayZenNi, who came to cheer us on during every promotion, I really appreciate your efforts and support. I feel like we received so much love this year. Let's stay strong until the end of 2024, and always take care of your health!
Xiaojun: WayZenNi gave us so much love in 2024. I hope we gave you just as much love in return, and let's keep loving each other the same way next year!
Hendery: Thank you for always sending us so much support and energy. Let's stay healthy and keep meeting for a long time!
Yangyang: Thanks to WayZenNi always being by our side, I feel more energized. Let's keep up the good work and run forward together!
