BTS's Jin Shares the Inspiration Behind 'Super Tuna': A Fishing Adventure Turned Hit Song
On the November 19 episode of the web show Limousine Service, BTS's Jin revealed the unexpected backstory of his solo track Super Tuna. The artist shared how a fishing trip with producer BUMZU inspired the lighthearted hit.
During the show, host Lee Mujin commented on Jin's previous emotional solo tracks, bringing up Super Tuna as a contrast. Jin playfully countered, saying, "That song is emotional too," to which Lee responded in disbelief, sparking laughter.
Jin explained, "The song was created by me and BUMZU. Initially, we wanted to go fishing, but our schedules didn't align. One day, during a photoshoot, I thought, 'Why not make a fishing song while holding a fishing rod?' That's how it started."
While enjoying fishing under the guise of work, Jin encountered an unexpected event. "According to experts, the place we were fishing in would never have tuna. At the time, we only had the beat—no lyrics or title. While jokingly singing, 'It would be great to catch tuna,' we actually caught one," Jin recalled.
He added, "Half the lyrics came from our conversations at the scene. Lines like 'If it's tuna, so what? If it's flounder, so what?' were directly inspired by that moment." Jin also shared that the line "pal-ddak-pal-ddak" (flopping) originated from BUMZU's excitement, saying, "He was so thrilled, claiming his heart was flopping."
Lee Mujin praised the song after hearing the story, commenting, "Knowing this makes the quality even better."
Super Tuna, released in 2021, recently climbed to No. 1 on Billboard's World Digital Song Sales chart. Forbes interpreted the track's resurgence as a celebration of Jin's return from military service, which concluded on June 12 this year.
