G-Dragon's time has begun again. After a hiatus of 7 years and 4 months, he has returned with a bang, releasing the new track POWER, showcasing his unmistakable GD power.
On October 31, G-Dragon released the digital single POWER and even surprised fans with a sneak peek on Instagram Live. This marks his first release in approximately 88 months since 2017.
His impact was immediate. As of 11 a.m. on November 1, POWER claimed the top spot on Bugs' real-time chart and Naver Vibe's domestic trending chart. It also reached No. 2 on Melon's Top 100 and Hot 100 charts and Genie's Top 200. Notably, within just five minutes of release, POWER gained over 80,000 listeners on Melon.
The music video garnered significant attention as well, with over 100,000 concurrent viewers upon its release and amassing 7.7 million views within 17 hours.
POWER is a quintessential G-Dragon hip-hop track that channels his energy into music. The upbeat rhythm grabs the listener from the start, but it's G-Dragon's powerful rapping that truly stands out, with unique rhythms and a vibrant rap performance. The lyrics shine with clever wordplay, delivering both personal expression and social commentary, with lines like, "Shout out to the haters sharing my memes," "I'm beautiful because I'm true to myself," and "I got the power, the power, 88 flying high."
G-Dragon contributed to both lyrics and composition, collaborating with top producers like Tommy Brown, Theron Thomas, and Steven Franks.
In a recent program, G-Dragon explained, "POWER is a song about strength, and to me, my strength is music. I wanted to reflect on the power of media and emphasize a blend of different types of strength, including satire about power."
International media has taken notice. Billboard reported that G-Dragon has embarked on a new musical journey through a partnership with the U.S. record label EMPIRE, describing POWER as a track that radiates positive and intense determination.
CNA highlighted G-Dragon as a K-pop trailblazer, with the CEO of EMPIRE describing him as a "cultural force that laid the foundation for K-pop's global expansion."
With this comeback, G-Dragon is expected to have a busy end of the year. He will perform at the 2024 MAMA Awards in Japan on November 23, where he is anticipated to deliver a live stage of POWER.
