Novelist Han Kang (54) has become the first Korean writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Congratulatory messages have poured in from figures including BTS's V and RM.
On October 10, V shared the news of Han Kang's Nobel Prize win on social media, writing, "I read 'The Boy is Coming' while in the military. Congratulations." RM also shared his congratulations with crying and heart emojis.
The wave of congratulations continued. Former announcer Seo Hyun-jin said, "Han Kang, finally! Congratulations. Please continue to write great works. From a longtime fan in a corner."
Former AOA member Seolhyun shared an excerpt from Han Kang's "The Boy is Coming." She highlighted the quote, "What is a human? What must we do to not be what is not human?"
Actress Kim Min-ha posted a photo and a passage from Han Kang's novel *No Goodbye*. She added, "The Nobel Prize in Literature belongs to Han Kang," offering warm words of congratulations.
Singer Hynn also chimed in. She famously took her stage name from Han Kang's novel *The White Book*, where the line "Even if I become tainted, I will only hand over what is white" left a deep impression on her.
Hynn said, "Through the words in *The White Book*, I made a resolution as an individual and musician to convey pure, heartfelt sincerity in my music, no matter the hardships or scars."
She added, "I was so happy to hear about the Nobel Prize win. It's a proud moment that a Korean work, with the author’s unique perspective and insight, has moved people around the world."
Choi Hee commented, "Amazing. My mother, who experienced the Gwangju Uprising firsthand, said it took her three years to finish 'The Boy is Coming' because it was so painful to read. Congratulations."
Comedian Shim Jin-hwa expressed her awe, saying, "This is incredible. Such a historic moment feels overwhelming." Actor Ryu Deok-hwan shared, "Han Kang's novels have greatly influenced me. Congratulations."
Kim So-young added, "K-pop, K-content, K-food, K-beauty. These recent times were extraordinary, and now it's literature. I am overwhelmed to witness Korean culture blooming like this in my lifetime."
Actor Ryu Jun-yeol simply wrote, "Goosebumps." Other celebrities, including Moon Ga-young, Kim Hye-soo, Shin So-yul, Ok Ja-yeon, and Super Junior's Yesung, also shared Han Kang's Nobel Prize win and joined in the celebrations.
Han Kang, born in 1970, has elevated the stature of Korean literature with works like *The Vegetarian*. She became the first Korean to win the prestigious International Booker Prize in 2016.
On October 10, the Swedish Academy announced Han Kang as the recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature. She is the second Korean to win a Nobel Prize, following former President Kim Dae-jung in 2000.
The Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to 121 people in total. Han Kang is the 18th female recipient. The prize comes with 11 million kronor (about 1.34 billion won), a medal, and a diploma.
Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel committee, praised Han Kang for her "unique perception of the connection between body and soul, between the living and the dead," calling her work "poetic, experimental," and a "pioneer in modern prose."
