"All of SEVENTEEN's music is written and composed by human creators." (Woozi )
The BBC has corrected a misreport about SEVENTEEN, which suggested that the group's new song may have been created using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
The BBC published an article titled 'K-pop's AI experiment pays off' on its website on the 11th (Korea time). It introduced how K-pop artists are using AI.
SEVENTEEN was mentioned. It claimed that the title track "MAESTRO" from their best album "17 Is Right Here" may contain AI-generated lyrics.
This was based on comments made by member Woozi. At a press conference for the album's release in April, Woozi said, "Of course I wrote and composed with AI. We even practiced it."
He added, "I think we should keep up with the advancement of technology rather than just complain about it." He also explained the reason for this effort.
He also revealed the reasons for this effort. He wanted to preserve his musical identity: "I'm thinking every day about how to preserve my identity in the face of evolving technology," he said.
The BBC paraphrased Woozi's comments. It framed the AI exercise as a "possible new song using AI technology". It ignored the full context.
In response, Pledge Entertainment told The Dispatch, "It is not true that AI was used in the lyrics of the Seventeen song."
It asked for a correction of the misreporting. "We immediately communicated our position to the BBC to correct the story," a representative explained.
Woozi has also responded to the story directly. "All of SEVENTEEN's music is written and composed by human creators," he posted on social media on the 14th.
He expressed his disbelief. "We are trying to see what we can do with AI tools = AI may have been used in the songwriting," he wrote, with a question mark.
On the 15th, the BBC amended the story. It removed the reference to AI-generated lyrics. "It said Woozi was 'experimenting' with AI," it wrote.
"This article has been amended to clarify that while AI is being experimented with in K-pop, it was not used to write the lyrics for SEVENTEEN's new album," it added at the end of the report.
Meanwhile, SEVENTEEN will be holding their eighth fan concert, "SEVENTEEN in CARAT LAND," on 23 and 24 November at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Guro-gu, Seoul.
