Why did 'Despicable Me 4' use BTS and Blackpink for its OST?

As 'Despicable Me 4' becomes the first animated franchise to surpass the $5 billion mark at the box office, the film's OST features songs by BTS and BLACKPINK, and the director explains why he chose the K-Pop artists.

The animated film Despicable Me 4, which is set to be released in South Korea on 24 April, includes BTS' "Dynamite" and BLACKPINK's "Boom Boom.

"There are many artists with global fanbases, but K-Pop has a unique charm that reaches out to the world," said director Chris Rynod, who directed the film. "The music is fun and full of energy, which I thought was similar to the purpose of the 'Despicable Me' series, which is to give the audience a good time," he said, explaining why he chose K-Pop for the OST.

"When you go to a hair salon or public place, you can always hear the latest music. We used BTS's music to give a modern feel and positive energy," he said, pointing out the unique appeal of BTS's music that is universal across the globe.

They also chose to use Blackpink's songs because of their unique energy. "We really listened to a lot of songs to find the right one for this scene," says director Chris Rynod, "and 'Boom Boom' was perfect for the film's energy, action, and the fun the Minions are having," he says, adding that he was pleased with the choice.

BTS and BlackPink's use of the film's music in a global franchise is a testament to the global popularity of K-Pop.
