Hueningkai x Huening Bahiyyih: "We Are Each Other's Driving Force"

GQ This is Hueningkai and Huening Bahiyyih's first sibling photoshoot. Aside from the 'Huening family' challenge, it's rare to see the two working so closely. What is it like meeting each other at work?HK It definitely feels different from when we met on music programs, discovering a new side of Huening Bahiyyih. I've always wanted to do a photo shoot together, and I'm grateful to <GQ> for giving me the opportunity.HB I also saw the personal photo shoot of Huening Kai and thought, 'Of course there's something extraordinary.' It's the first time I've spent such a long time with my brother after my debut. I think today's photoshoot will be a memory that will last a lifetime. I can't wait to show it to my parents.GQ When Bahiyyih debuted, she went viral for her appearance that looked exactly like Kai. Doesn't it feel strange to see the person who most resembles you on screen?HB I always watch his fancams, but I have never thought we looked alike when I saw him on screen. People around me have told me I look very similar to him, so I wonder if it's true. How do we look alike?GQ Actually, I think your nose is similar to your brother's.HK Oh, you recognize that! Bahiyyih's nose looks exactly the same as mine.HB Do you call it a hooknose? (Laughs) If you look at us from the side, we have a sunken-in nasal bridge. I heard that I was hit hard by a toy that fell from above and got a dent when I was young, and my brother hit a glass window. The eldest sister, Lia, is the only one with a smooth nose.GQ Aside from appearance, is there anything you feel alike about in personality?HB: First of all, I think we are both very positive.HK: That's right. I am cooler than most people think. Even if I have worries, I feel better when I wake up as if nothing happened. I think this is a characteristic of the 'Huening Family'.

GQ So when you look back on your childhood, what kind of brother and sister were Kai and Bahiyyih?HB He was really clumsy. More than you can imagine. I remember that I always packed my brother's bag before he went to school, decided what clothes to wear, and even checked his school supplies in case he forgot anything. Do you remember it too?HK I remember. But I think this is an ongoing thing. (Laughs) I am still receiving a lot of help from people around me. In fact, when she was young, Bahiyyih was more like an older sister than a younger sister. In fact, Bahiyyih was more mature. Everyone knows it. Members also tell me to be nice to my sister. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude one more time.GQ I'm also curious about the siblings' teenage years. In some ways, puberty can be an embarrassing past only the family knows about. It is likely that you have observed this most closely, so let's take the time to talk about those times.HB I feel sorry for Kai's adolescence. While I couldn't come home often because of practice, I saw my brother's changes every time I saw him. He wasn't the clumsy older brother I used to know. I felt like he had matured too quickly. Even though it's a bit awkward to say, Kai has grown up well.HK Did I grow up well? (Laughs) I'm glad to hear Bahiyyih say that. Although I was young at the time, I think I grew up quickly because I had to deal with a lot of things on my own. Still, when I was a trainee, I missed my family more.GQ It was a time when we realized how important family is.HK Yes. Thinking about it now, I felt quite nostalgic.GQ I don't think the two ever had a big fight. Bahiyyih often nags in a cute and warm way, saying, "Hey, please contact mom," but both of you seem easy-going.HK: That's right, we almost never fight.HB Because I know that everything he says and does is sincere. Ah, but I'm still nagging him to call mom. He didn't call mom today, so we've just made a video call together during break time to say hello to mom.

GQ: You know there are "real siblings" and "unreal siblings", and I think the two of you are closer to the latter. I could see respect and understanding for each other.HK I think that's true to some extent. Actually, we were "real siblings" when we were younger. But after I became a trainee, we became estranged and tried to care for each other more. I realized how precious the time we were together was.HB: If you spend four years apart like we did, you could probably become "unreal siblings" too.GQ You both achieved the same dream. How did Kai feel as he watched Bahiyyih appear on the reality competition show Girls Planet 999? It seems you had a lot to say as a senior who went through this process first.HK I was very worried because I knew that a competition show would be challenging since I had been there. But at that time, Bahiyyih was so desperate, and I couldn't stop her because I could tell what she wanted. I didn't want to stop her dream. Still, I am proud and impressed that she has endured well.GQ Bahiyyih, what is the most comforting advice Kai gave you?HB He always says good things. He's always around to compliment me, so I think this has become normal. I found comfort in everything my brother said, and his presence itself gave me strength.GQ: Have you ever cried in front of each other?HK Oh yes. I once cried while reading my mother's diary at home. I haven't cried much since my debut, but it's been a long time since I cried. Bahiyyih was next to me and she also cried.HB I was holding back my tears because I didn't want to cry, but I saw my brother's tears falling on the diary. I cried too as soon as I saw it.GQ What was written in your mom's diary?HK About what my mother experienced when she was exactly our age. The hardships she faced, the emotions she felt, and the longing she had for her grandfather. That was a bit sad.HB So call mom often!

GQ As colleagues rather than siblings, how would Kai and Bahiyyih describe each other as artists?

HB I am proud to say that my brother is my role model.

HK Really? Am I that good?

HB There is a reason. You may not be able to feel it, but I am one of the people who has seen the energy and passion that comes from you up close. As I know very well that my brother's current position was the result of his efforts so far, I want to emulate him.

HK For me, Bahiyyih is the driving force since she is watching very closely. I always think I have to work harder because Bahiyyih is watching, and I try to become an older brother, colleague, and senior that I am not ashamed of.

GQ If you two were given the opportunity to work as a unit, what style of song and performance would you like to present?

HK We both like pop songs. How about playing guitar together and making easy listening music that everyone can enjoy, with vocal harmonies?

HB That's right! Not long ago, we talked about doing a cover song together.

HK Speaking of, how about Jason Mraz's 'I'm Yours'? I think it would suit us well.

GQ: Just in case, what if you were to name the unit?

HB Well, Akdong Huening like Akdong Musician? (Laughs) Oppa, you're good at doing things like this.

HK We were both born in the summer, so how about 'Summer with you'? Oh, 'Summer with Hue' would be even better.

GQ What do the "Huening" siblings wish for each other in 2024?HK Health and happiness come first. And I hope Bahiyyih achieves her goals. Likewise, I hope to reach my goal.HB Personally, I also want to grow. As I started composing and practicing MIDI, I wanted to do better. In 2024, I plan to concentrate on my work.GQ Lastly, is there any truth you want to deliver or the secret about the siblings you would like to reveal?HK What I really want to say is that I know that Bahiyyih works harder than anyone else. So I believe she will grow even more next year. When Bahiyyih sets her mind to something, she never fails. Since she is so persistent and consistent, I hope she achieves her goals.
