On June 29th, Netflix unveiled the cast list for the second season of hit series 'Squid Game' (directed by Hwang Dong-Hyuk).
Along with the original stars of Lee Jung-Jae, Lee Byung-Hun and Gong Yoo, the teaser clip and captions on Squid Game's official Instagram account (@squidgamenetflix) revealed new players including Yim Si-Hwan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-Hoon and Yang Dong-Geun.
In addition, Netflix uploaded a group photo of eight actors who have newly joined the game. The photo showed Park Gyu-Young, Jo Yu-Ri, Kang Ae-Sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-Uk, Choi Seung-Hyun, Roh Jae-Won and Won Ji-An.
The unexpected casting is attracting attention. Choi Seung-Hyun, also known as T.O.P. from K-pop group Big Bang, is one of the new faces. He had temporarily stepped back in his career after being convicted of marijuana use in 2016. Since then, Choi Seung-Hyun has hinted at retirement from the entertainment industry on several occasions. The reports became more apparent in February last year when he terminated his exclusive contract with YG Entertainment, and in May, his announcement to leave Big Bang.
However, it seems as though he will not be retiring. In fact, he will be making a comeback in one of the biggest projects ever, taking up a role in 'Squid Game 2.' Since his feature in action and spy movie 'Commitment' (2013) and crime film 'Tazza: The Hidden Card' (2014), and Chinese film 'Out of Control' (2016), this will be a comeback to screens in seven years for the actor.
Lee David and Lee Jin-Uk have teamed with director Hwang for the second time. Previously, Lee David has worked with the director for the film 'The Fortress' (2017), whereas Lee Jin-Uk acted in movie 'Miss Granny' (2014).
Veteran actress Kang Ae-Sim has also joined the cast who is already well recognized for her strong acting skills in Netflix movie 'Move to Heaven' and JTBC drama 'Be Melodramatic.'
Alongside will be rookie actor Roh Jae-Won, who made his debut with 'Driving School' in 2020 and gained recognition for his acting skills through films like 'Missing Yoon' and 'Ditto.'
'Squid Game 2' is scheduled to begin filming in the second half of this year. Stay in tune!
