Members Minji and Hani of New Jeans, both born in 2004, have legally become adults this year.
Every year, the third Monday of May is celebrated as ‘Coming-of-Age day’ in Korea, which is a relatively new celebration that has been added to the Korean calendar in order to raise awareness and remind newly turned adults of their responsibilities.
On May 15th, the two expressed their feelings.
Firstly, Minji said, "The biggest change after becoming an adult seems to be the sense of responsibility. Before I decide on anything, I will think about responsibility once again and the consequences.”
Hani, who has dual citizenship of Australia and Vietnam, also applied the concept of turning legal age in Korea.
Hani said, "I became an adult this year, and it feels special and exciting, but at the same time, it feels like an ordinary thing." She reflected on the meaning of turning a legal age by saying, "In a way, it is just getting one year older, but when you look at it as a number, '20' is a big and special step, and it can be interpreted as the beginning of a new stage in life."
She expressed her excitement, saying, "I am excited to start the new stage of my life with New Jeans and I look forward to our future." She added, "I am curious about the opportunities and experiences I will encounter in the future."
Minji and Hani made their debut in July 2022 with their first single 'New Jeans' and gained immense popularity with their succeeding songs such as ‘Attention', 'Hype Boy' and 'Cookie' right after their debut. New Jeans continued their success by dominating the charts with high rankings for 'Ditto' and 'OMG', solidifying their position as a strong presence in the music industry.
Later in July this year, New Jeans will hold their first fan meeting titled 'Bunnies Camp' at SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium in Songpa-gu, Seoul.
