On October 11th, singer and actor Ok Taec-Yeon uploaded a post on his Instagram of himself in his military uniform after his first reserve army training.
Under the photos there were hashtags including “#CaptainKorea” and “FirstReserveArmy.” This post is particularly meaningful as the star was a permanent resident of the United States, however gave up his status in order to serve as an active duty soldier in Korea.
Ok Taec-Yeon is known to have a herniated disc and was therefore ordered to serve as an alternative service, however the star chose to volunteer to enlist after undergoing surgery. In September 2017, Ok served 20 months and was discharged in May 2019.
During his military service, he was nicknamed 'Captain Korea' because he modelled his military uniform so well, and portrayed the image of the Marvel character Captain America.
Ok Taec-Yeon later expressed in an interview that he worked harder to match the name and work up to the expectations.
Since being discharged from the army, Ok has been involved in various activities and is currently playing the role of Ryu Sung-Joon in tvN's crime drama 'Blind.’
